He starred in several famous cartoon shorts of the 1930s, most notably Swing You Sinners!, Minnie the Moocher and Bimbo's Initiation.īimbo became a less prominent character after his girlfriend Betty Boop gained unexpected stardom and popularity with fans, with the Talkartoons cartoon retooled to give her top billing as the Betty Boop series in 1932.Īfter Hays Code censorship rules began to strictly get enforced in 1934, Bimbo disappeared from future Fleischer cartoons of the era, due to the implications of an anthropomorphic dog dating a human girlfriend being considered too risqué. The name Bimbo was chosen because in the 1920s the word was mostly associated with men who liked to fight. Bimbo has the distinction of being the first known cartoon character in history to ever have fully animated dialogue, as seen in the 1926 short My Old Kentucky Home, where a prototypical Bimbo says "Follow the ball and join in, everybody!" Betty Boop and Bimbo seen together in Minnie the Moocher (1932)īimbo later became the protagonist and star of Fleischer's Talkartoons series, positioned as a rival to Disney's Mickey Mouse, making his first named appearance as Bimbo in Hot Dog (1930), though Bimbo's design would not become standardized until around 1931. A precursor design of Bimbo, originally named Fitz, first appeared in the Out of the Inkwell series.īimbo was initially inspired by animation director Dick Huemer's work on Mutt and Jeff, who, when working on the Out of the Inkwell series, decided to give protagonist Koko the Clown a canine companion. He is most well known for his role in the Betty Boop cartoon series, where he featured as Betty's main love interest. I hope you guys check it out.Bimbo as seen in Bimbo's Initiation (1931)ĭrummer ("Betty Boop's Hollywood Mystery")īimbo is a fat, black and white cartoon pup created by Fleischer Studios. Overall I give this cartoon 5/5, Its not just one of my favorite Betty Boop cartoons, but one of my favorite cartoons of all time. Cab's Music matches perfecty with the surreal tone of the cartoon. The song is really good and the animation which is rotoscoped matches very well. Like I said before the cartoon contains music from Cab Calloway. Now to the most important part the music.

Also around this time in the Betty Boop cartoons the animation was becoming alot more cleaner. I love in the cave scene the background is very detailed and the rotoscope is amazing. The animation in this short is beautiful. She chases Betty,Bimbo, and Koko and bimbo turns the dragon inside out and the cartoon concludes with the three playing in the snow. Koko sings "Saint James Infrimary Blues" and the queen freezes them and ask the mirror is she the fairest in which the mirror responds she's the fairest in the land and explodes turning her into a dragon. Bimbo and Koko follow her into the cave where betty is. The stepmother finds out Betty is still alive and uses her mirror to turn into a witch. She then ends up getting trapped in a giant snowball which turns into a casket and the seven dwarfs come get her. Betty sings a quick song called Always In The Way" which drives Bimbo and Koko to tears and they decide to let her go. The queen jealous of Betty's beauty tells Bimbo and Koko to chop off her head. So Betty decides to see her "stepmama", the queen to see her looking glass. This cartoon has a strange way of telling snow white's story

This cartoon features the music of the great Cab Calloway, who was also in 2 other Betty Boop shorts. This probably one of the greatest Pre~Code cartoons ever.

Today I wanna talk about my favorite adaption of Snow White (Sorry Disney.) By Max Fliescher(Probably butchered his name) There arent words to describe this cartoon, well actually there are thats why I wrote this review.
